Oud Ispahan — Dior, 2012
Rose arrives first and it arrives powdered, Turkish and full, closer to petals pressed flat in a book than to anything still growing. It holds that shape for a few minutes and then begins to darken from underneath.
What darkens it is Laotian oud. Indonesian patchouli comes with it, earthy and damp, and labdanum lends the whole thing a resinous weight. Sandalwood sits at the base, creamy and dry at once, keeping the oud from turning medicinal. The rose never leaves. It simply stops being the loudest thing in the room.
François Demachy built this as one long dissolve, floral into smoke, with no seam where either becomes the other. Rose and oud is the oldest pairing in perfumery and most houses stage it as a duel. Dior stages it as an agreement.
